Ink Aware applications are software that is not the Smart Notebook software, but recognizes the use of the smart tools and integrates them into its use. Below is a list of applications that recognize Ink Aware.

For this training we will focus on the most commonly used applications - Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Microsoft Word
When using Microsoft Word or Excel with your Smart Board Interactive Whiteboard you will notice a panel of four buttons, either connected at the top of the screen or it maybe floating within the page. In Office 2007 the Smart Aware icons appear under the Add-Ins menu heading.
If the panel does not appear either along the top of the program or in a floating menu then you need to add it. At the top using the menu drop downs choose View > Toolbars > Smart Aware Toolbar. The tool bar will appear. If it is floating and you want it attached at the top, just click and drag the panel into the top of the screen. To do the reverse just click the panel at the top and drag it down into the page.
Insert as an Image
To write in Microsoft Word, open the program. Pick up a pen of any color, you will notice that the Smart Overlay does not appear, start drawing on the screen. When you stop you will notice that what you drew appears as if it is part of Word. To make it a permanent part of Word click the first button on the Smart Aware Toolbar to insert the drawing as an image.
The drawing is now part of the word file. You cannot pick up the eraser and erase what you have written. You can click the undo icon to return it back to a drawing. The drawing will always appear as part of the document, so it will appear there when you print the document off.
Insert as Text
Using the pen write a word on the screen. If you have already typed on the screen you can write anywhere you want on the screen, just place the cursor wherever you want the drawn word to appear on the page. Then click the Convert Writing into Typed Text button on the tool bar.
The word will take on the color of the pen that you used.
Microsoft Excel
The Ink Aware uses in Excel are the same as they are in Word. You can create a drawing and insert it into the spreadsheet making it appear over or next to the text on the screen. Adding text is similar except that you must choose which cell to place your text. Writing anywhere on the screen will put the text into the chosen cell. The text will take on whatever formatting there is within the particular cell you chose. The same Smart Aware panel appears in Excel as it does in Word, so the buttons have the same functions.
Microsoft PowerPoint
PowerPoint, like Word and Excel, has the same Smart Aware Toolbar that appears either at the top of the screen or floating within the program. The difference with Power Point is that it has two different aspects to the program. There is the presentation screen where you show your presentation and then there is the presentation edit screen where create and edit your presentations. The edit screen uses the Smart Aware Toolbar just like Word and Excel. You have the same options of adding as text, adding as drawing or capturing to notebook. The presentation screen is where things differ.
When you start your slide show you will notice the following toolbar in the lower left hand corner. It is called the Smart Aware Presentation Toolbar
Each button provides the above mentioned task when pressed on the screen. Pressing the Command menu opens up another menu.
The Command Menu gives you Power Point and Smart Notebook options
Saving ink notes... - capture to any image of current slide to Smart Notebook
Insert Drawing as Image - insert any drawings to the slide as a image
Clear Drawing - clear any drawings
Add Blank Slide - add a new slide to the presentation

Smart Floating Tools - launch the smart floating tools toolbar
End Show - end the show and return to the edit screen

Go to Slide - skip to any slide in the presentation
Black/Unblack Screen - Blacken screen to hide what is there
Print Slide - print slide to your default printer
Show PowerPoint Menu - open PowerPoint Menu
Settings Submenu
Double-Press to Advance - toggle off to advance with single press
Save Drawing at End of Show - toggle off if you do not want to save drawings after closing show
Transparent Toolbar - toggle off for an opaque toolbar
After you end the show you may be asked if you want to save any drawings you made to your slides.
Clicking Yes will add the drawing to your slide. No will not. The drawing will not become a permanent part of your slide until you save your presentation. Once you save it you cannot erase you're drawing.
Power Point tips:
Blacken the screen if you want to get the attention of the classroom.
Drawing on the slide while on the edit screen does not always work well. Draw while presenting to keep the drawing there.
Double pressing
Press anywhere on the screen once then again to the right of the first press to advance the slide
Press anywhere on the screen once then again to the left of the first press to go to the previous slide.
